Latex mattress shopping gets easier once you separate material terminology from marketing. This guide focuses on the distinctions that actually change how a mattress is built, feels, and is owned over time.
Natural latex
Natural latex foam uses rubber harvested from Hevea brasiliensis trees as its primary polymer source. Manufacturers may still use necessary processing ingredients, so 'natural latex foam' does not literally mean raw sap with nothing else added.
Synthetic latex
Synthetic latex is manufactured from petrochemical-derived polymers such as styrene-butadiene rubber. It can be engineered for consistency and cost but is not the same material claim as natural rubber latex.
Blended latex
Some foams combine natural and synthetic latex. 'Latex mattress' alone does not tell you which composition you are buying.
How to verify
Read the component description and certification details. GOLS certification, where legitimately applicable, is a stronger signal about certified organic natural-latex content than vague phrases like 'eco latex' or 'latex-inspired foam.'
Processing ingredients still exist
Natural latex foam is a manufactured material. Foaming, curing, vulcanization, washing, and stabilization require more than raw tree sap. That does not make natural latex equivalent to synthetic latex; it simply means 'natural' should not be interpreted as 'one ingredient.'
Questions worth asking
Ask what percentage or standard supports the natural-latex claim, whether the foam is blended, which process is used, whether a certification applies, and whether the manufacturer identifies the source or supplier. Clear answers are more useful than vague labels such as 'eco foam.'
