Latex ILD vs Density: What the Numbers Mean

Understand the difference between latex firmness measurements and density—and why neither number predicts mattress comfort by itself.

Latex mattresses are unusually serviceable and configurable, but those advantages come with practical details that are easy to overlook. This guide focuses on the decision itself rather than generic sleep advice.

ILD describes resistance to compression

Indentation Load Deflection is measured by compressing a foam sample by a specified percentage under specified test conditions and recording the required force. Higher values generally correspond to firmer foam within comparable testing.

Density describes mass per volume

Density tells you how much a given volume of foam weighs. It can relate to formulation and feel, but it is not simply another firmness scale.

Why shoppers confuse them

Denser latex is often—but not always—firmer, so the numbers can appear interchangeable. Different formulations and processes can produce foams with similar ILD and different density or vice versa.

Layer thickness changes perception

A thin layer and a thick layer made from the same foam can feel different in a mattress because you interact with the layers beneath them differently.

Whole-mattress firmness is more complex

Cover tension, quilting, layer order, body weight, sleep position, and the support core all affect perceived firmness. A single ILD value cannot predict the feel of the finished bed.

Use ILD and density to understand components, then combine them with construction details and a sensible trial or adjustment policy.
